Vitamins and Breast Cancer, Water Pollution, Dentist Dangers, GM foods
Good quality vitamins really do help keep you healthy
A new study presented at the American Association for Cancer Research's annual meeting has found that women who take multivitamins and calcium drastically reduce their odds of getting breast cancer. The study, conducted at the Ponce School of Medicine in Puerto Rico, found that women who routinely took multivitamins reduced their risk of developing breast cancer by almost 30 percent. Women who took nutritional supplements and calcium fared even better - reducing their risk by 40 plus percent.
Lead author PhD Jaime Matta and his colleagues from the Ponce School of Medicine in Puerto Rico found nutrient supplementation was linked to positive results when taken over an extended period." It is not an immediate effect" said Matta. "However, we did see a long-term effect in terms of breast cancer reduction".
The study compared the lifestyle habits of 268 breast cancer sufferers to those of 457 healthy women. Matta concluded that vitamin supplements may help subjugate cancer risk by enhancing DNA repair capacity.
Ironically, the study coincides with another study that is receiving widespread attention. That study conducted by Sweden's Karolinska Institute and published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that women who take multivitamins have a 20% increase in the risks of getting breast cancer.
Many find that the idea that adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals could somehow be unhealthy is absurd. Not surprisingly, criticism of the study has been immediate. Professor John Boyages, director of the Westmead Breast Cancer Institute and spokesman for the National Breast Cancer Foundation, said he "wouldn't put any weight" on the study, as there were "many complicated risk factors involved in breast cancer."
Likewise, the Australia Complementary Healthcare Council cautioned consumers to "not panic" at the findings. It also cited "concerns over limitations to the study", such as its reliance on self-administered questionnaires and failure to look at the bioactivity of multivitamin ingredients.
No mention was made in the study of whether the health habits of the women who took the vitamins were compared to those who didn't take vitamins. Neither was there any mention of what kind of multivitamins the women took. Too many people think that they can offset unhealthy diets and lifestyles by popping a daily vitamin pill. In addition, over 95% of such supplements consist of ground up rocks, petroleum by-products and coal-tar derivatives.
Virtually every study which has returned negative results about vitamins or minerals has used the inferior and unnatural forms, instead of the whole food forms found in nature. In addition, virtually all such studies fail to take into account the fact that nature works synergistically.
Isolating individual vitamins and minerals or other nutrients and adding them to an overall unhealthy diet might be compared to putting a hasty patch on a leaky roof on a building with a crumbling foundation. You might get some relief, but when a bad storm (disease) comes along, you may be ill prepared to keep the storm at bay.
Mainstream medical science makes the same mistakes when it tries to synthesize vitamins and compounds found in nature, or else uniquely isolate them. Doing so does not produce the natural molecule with supporting compounds or the whole vitamin profile found in nature. It does, however, produce something that can be patented and profited from. It also produces something that the body does not recognize as natural and which is liable to have side effects over 95% of the time.

FDA finally sued over its illegal suppression of raw milk
Recently the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund, a non-profit organization devoted to protecting family farms and their customers from unconstitutional government intrusion, has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Food and Drug Administration over its unconstitutional ban on the interstate sale of raw milk. The case is one of the largest the FTCLDF has ever initiated, particularly against the FDA which has been leading the unlawful crusade against raw milk for many years.
Ironically, in 1987 when the FDA first established guidelines that restricted interstate raw milk sales, the agency did so reluctantly at the behest of a court ruling prompted by a consumer group. Things have changed dramatically since that time, as the agency now aggressively leads the charge to disrupt and eliminate all raw milk sales wherever it can.
Whenever it is challenged on its position regarding raw milk, the FDA typically does not have much, if anything, to say in response. The agency typically resorts to an outdated, deceptive slideshow presentation available on its website that supposedly indicts raw milk as being unsafe for human consumption.
This is besides the fact that its rules violate the U.S. Constitution.
Statistical data actually reveals that raw milk is far safer than not only pasteurized milk, but also a lot of other processed foods that are implicated foodborne illness outbreaks. Lunchmeat, for instance, has a far worse track record of being contaminated with bacteria like salmonella and E. coli than does raw milk. The FDA has yet to participate in an honest debate concerning these facts.
Additionally, the FTCLDF case presents alternatives to the FDA's existing policy, including simply requiring labeling that indicates the milk is unpasteurized. Considering that raw milk is legal in roughly half of the United States, there is no legitimate reason why the FDA continues to vilify it, especially since it is far safer than many other foods available on the market.
D.C. fish undergoing sex change
A new report shows that Male fish are turning into females. They're even carrying eggs in their testes instead of sperm.
This is happening in a little town you may have heard of: Washington, D.C.
The Potomac Conservancy says 80 percent -- 80 percent! -- of male bass in the Potomac River are now showing female traits. And since 90 percent of Washington D.C.'s drinking water comes from "The Nation's River," the people of our capital city are also drinking the same chemical cocktail that's turning boy fish into shemales.
Government experts say it's not just one chemical causing the changes... but the overwhelming amount of stuff in the water, including meds like birth control pills, perfumes and other toiletries, antibacterial tissues, and the usual blend of industrial and agricultural waste.
The Potomac Conservancy is demanding an investigation -- which only proves they're really in Washington. Call in a panel, speak to experts, pass a law -- none of it will matter. The water is polluted beyond all recognition, and Washington is only the beginning. Shemale fish are being found in rivers from the Mississippi to the Rio Grande, the Savannah to the Colorado.
In one study of fish from 111 sites in nine major U.S. river basins, government researchers found at least one "intersex" fish at each site... except for the Yukon.
It is hard to believe that this country actually has an agency that is supposed to "protect human health and to safeguard the natural environment -- air, water and land -- upon which life depends. "That's from the Environmental Protection Agency's own mission statement.
They’re doing a poor job of it.
Your dentist can give you cancer
If you've been to the dentist, you know how it is – they want to X-ray you every time you open your mouth.
Zap, zap, zap, zap -- each time your dentist hits that switch, you get hit with a powerful blast of radiation right in your face. Don't think for a second that it's safe-- because a new study shows how all those dental X-rays can turn into a battle for your life with thyroid cancer.
British researchers looking into the alarming rise of this unusual cancer found that patients who've been X-rayed 10 times or more have 5.4 times the thyroid risk when compared to those smart enough to avoid dental X-rays, according to the study in the journal Acta Oncologica.
The study, which used data from 313 thyroid cancer patients and a similar number of people who didn't have the condition, also found that between five and nine X-rays will quadruple your risk, and getting zapped up to four times will double your risk.
The researchers say dentists should lay off the radiation trigger, and stop giving X-rays for routine exams or when accepting new patients.
It's so bad that many people get hit with more radiation during dental visits than during all their other health appointments put together, and the new study shows how that little lead bib isn't going to save you.
And when your dentist isn't zapping you, they are busily packing your teeth with some of the most powerful poisons on earth: fluoride and mercury. So just say NO!
And people actually pay for this!
Victory against Frankenfoods: India blocks harvesting of GM crops
Finally, a country stands up to Mansanto’s Genetically Modified seeds
Critics of genetically modified (GM) crops have secured a victory in India, where the environment minister has indefinitely blocked the approval of any further GM varieties.
GM cotton was approved for cultivation in India in 2002, and now covers 80 percent of the country's cotton farmlands. In October 2009, the country's Genetic Engineering Approval Committee gave approval for the planting of a GM eggplant produced by Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Co., in partnership with Monsanto. The brinjal-variety eggplant had been engineered with genes from the bacteria Bacillus thuringniensis (Bt) to produce pesticide in its tissues.
The approval of the country's first GM food crop sparked an uproar among farmers, environmentalists, health advocates and other GM critics across India. Critics objected to the unknown health effects of consuming or working near GM foods, as well as the risks that the plants could produce "genetic pollution" by crossing with non-GM varieties.
"Stringent monitoring measures should be immediately put in place to ensure that no releases of GM crops happens," said Rajesh Krishnan of Greenpeace India.
Farmers also object to the fact that GM seeds not only cost roughly three times as much as unmodified seeds, but must also be purchased each year from the company rather than saved from prior harvests, as farmers have traditionally done.
Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh responded by holding a series of public consultations across the country. After hearing critics' concerns, he placed a moratorium on any cultivation of Bt brinjal until "independent scientific studies" can prove "the safety of the product from the point of view of its long-term impact on human health and environment."
"Public sentiment is negative. It is my duty to adopt a cautious, precautionary, principle-based approach," Ramesh said. "The decision is responsible to science and responsive to society."
GM advocates claim that engineered foods are needed to address global food shortages, an assertion that critics reject."You can't simply abandon all other solutions, including organic farming, to focus just on biotechnology when the testing, labeling and enforcement standards are so inadequate," said Kushal Yada of the Center for Science and Environment.
If you would like to know more about the dangers of Genetically modified foods you can go to Hulu.com and watch “The Future of Food” video. It will open your eyes about some of the issues surrounding GM foods in our environment.
Until next time, stay heathy and happy
