Horseradish and Cancer
For years it's been the Holy Grail of medicine.
Drug companies have spent billions trying to develop a cure that could kill cancer cells while leaving your healthy tissue untouched.
Now a group of University of Illinois researchers say they've finally found it.
It's not some pill or IV drip that's going to cost you an arm and a leg, either. It's a superfood that may be sitting in your refrigerator right now.
But chances are it hasn't crossed your mind, let alone your dinner plate, in quite a while.
"Like broccoli on steroids"
When was the last time you had some horseradish? That's right, horseradish.
You probably think of it as just a condiment. Something you use to make hot sauce or spice up an occasional Bloody Mary.
Well, bring that bottle of horseradish to its rightful place in the front of your refrigerator -- because it has a lot more going for it than you could ever imagine.
Horseradish is a member of that group of cancer fighters we've all been told to eat more of called cruciferous vegetables. But while broccoli and kale -- even cabbage -- have become superstars of healthy eating, the horseradish root somehow got left at the curb.
What this latest study uncovered, however, is that not only is horseradish right up there with those well-known cancer-fighting vegetables, it's even more powerful than a bushel of broccoli.
The researchers were able to document how horseradish, which contains ten times the amount of cancer-fighting compounds that broccoli does, works to keep us healthy and cancer-free.
These compounds are called glucosinolates, and they're the key players in these vegetables that make them such potent weapons against numerous cancers.
But if chugging down kale shakes, boiled turnips or cabbage stew isn't your idea of a delicious lunch or dinner, there's more good news here for you.
Mosbah Kushad, a crop scientist at the University of Illinois and lead researcher, said that just a teaspoon of horseradish is enough to give you all the benefits this spicy root has to offer.
This isn't the first time Kushad has closely examined the health benefits of horseradish. In a previous study he and his team found that those glucosinolates help the liver to detoxify carcinogens as well as to "suppress the growth of existing cancerous tumors."
That sure sounds like something Pfizer or Merck wish they had created!
On top of that, horseradish actually becomes healthier when processed. That allows for an enzyme it contains to make glucosinolates become even more effective.
And if stopping cancer in its tracks wasn't enough for you, here are some other health benefits that horseradish has to offer:
- A half teaspoon of the grated root is an effective treatment for sinusitis
- Horseradish has potent antibiotic properties, and is especially good at treating UTIs
- Other research has found that those anti-cancer compounds may also protect us from exposure to toxic chemicals in the environment.
With
all these benefits, there's no reason not to start incorporating horseradish
into your diet right now.
So how about mixing it with some mayo as a sandwich spread? Or into a salad dressing, cheese dip, a quick steak or fish sauce or even using it as a topping for one of those other healthy veggies like broccoli to give it some pizazz? That would sure make for a cancer-fighting heavyweight!

Wake
Up and Smell the Poison
Organic
Consumers Association, by Katherine Paul
If
you participated in the glyphosate test project launched last year by The
Detox Project (formerly Feed The World) and Organic Consumers
Association, you probably failed.
A
staggering 93 percent of Americans tested positive for glyphosate, according to
the test results, announced yesterday (May 25, 2016).
What
makes that figure even more alarming is that many of you who sent in urine
samples for testing probably eat more organic than non-organic food. Which
suggests that either your organic food has been contaminated and/or you’re
being exposed to glyphosate via unknown sources.
Worse
yet? Children had the highest levels.
The
testing, carried out by a laboratory at the University of California San
Francisco (UCSF), was the first-ever comprehensive and validated LC/MS/MS testing
project to be carried out across America. According to the results, people
who live in the west and mid-west tested higher than those living in other
regions of the country.
It's
way past time for the world to wake up and smell the poison.
Even
before glyphosate, the most-used herbicide in the world, was labeled
a ‘probable human carcinogen’ by the World Health Organization’s cancer agency
IARC in 2015, the chemical, prevalent in Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide, was
under fire from scientists who say the chemical makes us sick. Internal
documents reveal that Monsanto has known this all along.
Despite
the warnings, in 2012, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency EPA), under
pressure from Monsanto, raised the allowed limits for glyphosate residue on
fruits and vegetables. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), claiming
pesticide residues are “safe,” doesn’t test for glyphosate residue on
food.
Only
recently has the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) said it
will begin testing human food for glyphosate. The FDA is a bit late to the
testing party. Independent testing has already found glyphosate in many foods.
It’s also been found in breast milk.
The endocrine-disrupting (and
more) chemical is even in your beer.
Fortunately,
there are glimmers of hope that at least some parts of the world are waking
up to the obvious dangers associated with poisoning our food, our
ecosystem and ourselves. The European Commission has so far rejected Monsanto’s
bid to renew its licensing of glyphosate in the EU.
Glyphosate
is also up for renewal in the U.S. The EPA, amid controversy and
under pressure, is stalling.
What
progress has been made so far, in exposing the dangers of Roundup and
glyphosate and taking steps to ban it, have resulted from people power. In
October, we’ll take that people power to the next level, when we expose
Monsanto’s crimes at the Monsanto Tribunal, a citizen’s tribunal that will
be held October 15-16 in The Hague, Netherlands.
Power Your Brain With FAT!
Powering through life's everyday challenges can feel like trying to slog through mud -- especially if you're getting up there in years.
And it's not just your joints creaking or your muscles sagging. Hit a certain point, and you can practically feel the gears of your mind slowing down.
The latest research shows yet again how simple healthy fats can turbo charge the human brain -- because seniors who have higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids stay whip-smart longer.
That's why they positively ACED two critical tests of brain function in the new study.
First, the omega-rich older folks passed the Trail Making Test with flying colors.
That's not a quiz on how to find your way out of the woods. If you ever took it yourself, you'd think it was a joke -- because it looks like a child's connect-the-dots puzzle.
You have to circle letters and numbers in the right order, and how fast you can pull it off shows how well your brain can make the link between what you see and what you need to do, how fast it can process information and how quickly you can whip out basic facts you have memorized.
Speeding through this test is sure sign you've got better executive function and stronger cognitive abilities -- and folks with higher omega-3 levels did it 7.1 seconds faster than everyone else.
They were also given a verbal fluency test. That's a series of quizzes where you have to fire off as many words in a specific category as you can think of in 60 seconds -- like name every "F" word that comes to mind (yes, they'll accept even that one).
You might also be asked other questions, like list as many fruit as you can or name a bunch of animals.
Again, the folks in the study with higher omega levels did much better, listing three extra words per minute than those with lower levels.
Since there's no blood test for dementia, docs use quizzes like these to figure out if you're on the road to cognitive decline or if you've got nothing to worry about.
And as the study shows, if you boost your omega-3 intake you might not have anything to worry about at all -- because you can expect to stay sharp well into your golden years.
But you won't get it from bunny chow. If you gnaw on carrots and leaves all day, you'll end up with a bunny brain!
They're omega-3 FATTY acids, after all, so you need FATS to keep those gears well-oiled, especially fatty fish and pasture-raised meats (grain-fed meats, however, will NOT contain high omega-3 levels).
Be sure to also take an omega-3 supplement daily. Along with boosting your brain, they can help protect your heart and ensure a long and healthy life.

Treating Migraines
If there's one place where mainstream medicine has dropped the ball, it's in treating migraines.
Most of the time, they have you popping a pill after you're already locked in a dark room, blinded by pain. Thanks for nothing, right?
But what if you could stop even the worst migraines before they ever hit?
It all may be possible, thanks to some new, life-changing research out of Cincinnati.
Researchers say they've discovered three critical nutrient and vitamin deficiencies that may be causing your migraine misery.
And fixing the problem -- with supplements you can start taking today --may be the key to living the pain-free life you deserve.
Most of the time when you're dealing with migraines, the mainstream will hand you a bottle of pills and wish you luck.
But it looks like they should have been giving you a blood test instead.
Researchers at Cincinnati Children's Hospital looked at nearly 8,000 children and young adults with migraines. And over and over again, people with migraines were deficient in riboflavin (vitamin B2), CoQ10, and vitamin D.
If you have chronic migraines, they found, you're especially likely to be low on riboflavin and CoQ10.
The scientists behind the research think that being deficient in riboflavin, CoQ10, and vitamin D may be what's causing a lot of migraines in the first place. And that makes sense -- we know how important riboflavin and vitamin D are to muscle and nerve function, and CoQ10 is a fuel all our cells need for energy and to work right.
Now, it seems like every time good news on vitamins and supplements comes along, researchers try to throw cold water on it. They give that same song and dance about how we need more studies before we can say anything for sure.
And that's exactly what they did here, too. But what on Earth are they waiting for?
Just last week I told you about a study that found that people who took 400 mg of riboflavin for three months slashed the number of migraines they had.
And guess what? A study more than a decade ago on CoQ10 found the exact same thing.
We don't need more studies or to be playing games here. We need to start getting the word out.
If you suffer from migraines, there's no reason to wait another day to start putting riboflavin, CoQ10, and vitamin D to work for you. You might be able to get all you need from a quality multivitamin.
And if there's someone in your life who is dealing with migraines, please take a minute to forward this email to them.
