Simple Cancer Prevention, Glyphosate Update, Blood Pressure Changes

A Simple Cancer Prevention Treatment

Cancer of the esophagus now ranks number six on the list of killer cancers worldwide.

Surviving a handful of years past a diagnosis is no small feat -- only 20 percent make it to the five-year mark after discovery. And even the treatments meant to prolong your life can leave you unable to eat and dependent on a feeding tube.

So new findings about an easy way to prevent this deadly cancer are more important than ever.

And it might only take some small changes in your diet to keep you from becoming another victim of this killer.

Robert Kardashian Sr., well-known lawyer and father of the famous Kardashian clan, was only 59 when esophageal (or throat) cancer took his life.

This especially vicious disease also took movie legend Humphrey Bogart, author Christopher Hitchens, and Richard Dawson of Family Feud fame. While Bogey was probably never seen without a cigarette in his hand, one of Kardashian's daughters, Khloe, has said that her father never smoked nor drank.

And while doctors will warn you about those usual suspects in causing throat cancer... obviously, that's not always the case. So, it certainly makes sense to do anything we can to try and dodge this deadly disease, with this latest discovery looking like one of the most promising ways.

Researchers at the University of Texas have confirmed earlier findings on how zinc can keep throat cancer cells from multiplying!

Yep, zinc -- the micronutrient (called that as you only need a small amount to be effective) that you probably only think about when you're sick with a cold or the flu.

This study also discovered exactly how zinc accomplishes this feat in zapping cancer cells while leaving normal ones untouched. The scientists found that the mineral can block a "signal" unique to cancerous cells that tells them to keep on growing.

In fact, the researchers noted, a deficiency in zinc is commonly found in many cancer patients.

The lead author of this study, Zui Pan, a nursing professor at the university and expert on esophageal cancer, commented that this research could help bring about better prevention of throat cancer, adding "that's why it is important to have a good diet."

And it's true that you can get all the zinc you need just by choosing foods rich in this mineral.

For example:
  • ·        Where's the beef?: Beef is always at the top of any list of foods high in zinc, which is why vegetarians are very often lacking in the mineral. But be sure to choose grass-fed beef, as the zinc levels will be substantially higher.
  • ·        Flax to the max: I've told you a lot about the omega-3 content of flax seeds, but these tasty little toppings can add a lot of zinc to your diet. They go great sprinkled on your morning cereal, mixed with veggies, or even added to smoothies.
  • ·        Great Pumpkin seeds: If you only think about pumpkins during October, you'll be missing out on a nutrient powerhouse. Pumpkin seeds are not only anti-inflammatory and high in omega-3s, but they're a good source of zinc to boot!
  • ·        Pearls from the sea: If you're a seafood lover, shrimp and oysters are what you want to keep your zinc levels high.

All this good news about zinc may lead you to start loading up on the supplement variety, but don't overdo it. The recommended dose is only around 15 to 25 milligrams a day.

And if you are taking a zinc supplement, take it with water, not coffee, tea, or any other caffeinated drink, as those can cut your body's ability to absorb this lifesaving mineral in half.

Glyphosate Update

Do you have the cancer-causing weed killer glyphosate, a.k.a. Roundup, inside of your body? How about your kids and grandkids?

According to some new research, that's not just a possibility... but a probability.

Some stunning findings have just been released showing that we're all being turned into walking test tubes in Monsanto's long-running experiment with this chemical.

And doing whatever it takes to reduce exposure has now become more urgent than ever before.

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego, have been studying human exposure to glyphosate (the active ingredient in Roundup) for over two decades. And their most recent findings are unbelievably frightening.

After analyzing urine samples from volunteers in southern California for the past 23 years, they've now found that the number of people who have the chemical in their body has increased 500 percent, and the amounts of glyphosate they harbor have gone up by a whopping 1,200 percent!

Yet back in the early 1990s, when they started this testing, almost none of the participants had detectible levels.

Now, if you ask the FDA, CDC, or some other so-called health agency what that means, you'll probably hear the old "don't worry, be happy" refrain they've all been handing out for years.

And if you ask the folks at Monsanto, they'll tell you that there's nothing unusual about those numbers. In fact, they're "consistent with prior reports," and in no way "raise health concerns."

Well, if they say so!

In all seriousness, the harsh reality of this situation is that, while we really don't know exactly what this is doing to us (and even scarier, what it could be doing to our kids), what we've heard so far isn't very reassuring.

For example:
  • In a study out of the UK, rats who were fed low levels of glyphosate were at significantly higher risk of developing nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, or NAFLD, which can destroy your liver before you know what's happening. And the levels of the chemical detected in people just so happen to be "100-fold greater" than in those rats.
  • Several years ago, glyphosate was found to interfere with bacteria in the GI tract, which can cause essential amino acids to be depleted.
  • It's also been linked to kidney and liver damage, as well as being a likely contributor to a whole host of diseases such as IBS, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's.
  • And last, but certainly not least, two years ago, the World Health Organization said that glyphosate will "probably" cause cancer in people -- that's right, not rats or mice, but human beings.

But instead of our regulators pulling in the reins, glyphosate use is now totally out of control.

And it's not just used on Frankencrops (GMO) anymore, but loads of other foods as well. As we told you, Monsanto has been encouraging farmers to apply it as a drying agent on everything from lentils to peas to oats -- even oats that end up in baby food!

While those California researchers are planning to conduct studies looking at liver disease, including NAFLD in people, I don't think we have the luxury of waiting for those results.

That's why the most important thing you can do for yourself and your family is take these three steps to reduce your glyphosate exposure right now:

#1: Don't be tricked by TV ads into using Roundup or any other weed killer anywhere in the vicinity of your home.

#2: Give the boot to any products containing the big four Frankencrops -- corn, soy, canola, and sugar that comes from sugar beets -- unless they're organic or certified as GMO-free.

#3: Whenever possible, avoid using nonorganic lentils, peas, dry beans, flax, barley, potatoes, and oats, as these may be subject to post-harvest glyphosate applications.

Getting the glyphosate beast back into its cage, unfortunately, is next to impossible at this point. But thanks to these findings, at least we know what we need to do to keep it from attacking us.

By the way, there is some good news recently about Glyphosate. Europe voted not to approve Glyphosate for use in Europe. The EU Commission’s amended proposal to approve glyphosate herbicide for only 18 months failed to get qualified majority approval from EU member states. The issue will now go to an appeals committee, with a vote scheduled for around June.

Blood Pressure Change Worth Billions
Written by Melissa Young at HSI

Were you one of the over 30 million Americans who woke up one day last week to find that you'd suddenly developed high blood pressure... overnight?

You didn't even have to go see your doctor to get that news -- you just turned on the TV!

It was one of those "big" medical stories covered by media of every stripe "Doctors and other experts" from groups such as the American Heart Association (and 10 other organizations) officially moved the "goal line" for what's considered acceptable blood pressure down to readings no higher than 130/80.

And that move is something which will be stuffing a lot of cash into Big Pharma's pockets.

It will also be putting untold numbers of seniors at a very big risk for heart disease, dementia, Alzheimer's, and death... and not because they have high blood pressure.

Forget making your blood pressure soar. This is enough to make your blood boil!

The latest strategy to keep Big Pharma in the black is the most brazen yet -- one that would raise the number of U.S. adults considered to be suffering from hypertension to nearly half the population.

And if you're wondering how this all came about so suddenly, well, it's actually been a few years in the making.

Three years ago, a group of many of the most well-respected heart doctors out there published official guidelines in the top medical journal JAMA that, for once, actually raised blood pressure numbers.

They found no reason for those 60 or older, for example, to start up on blood pressure meds unless their readings are 150/90 or higher (with the systolic, or "top," number, getting shifted 10 points higher than where it had been at before).

And if you were under 60, the "no need to treat" number went up to 140/90.

At that time, the panel that released those higher numbers said that, while lower readings are still healthier, getting to those numbers by using risky drugs isn't.

But Big Pharma has been in a snit ever since, hoping to get those guidelines down to ones more favorable to its bottom line.

The groups behind these latest, higher revisions, of course, claim it's all for your own good -- you know, the hackneyed "ounce of prevention" explanation.

But as we've told you here in the eAlert, blood pressure meds are among some of the most dangerous ones out there.

ACE inhibitors, for instance, can cause sudden, life-threatening swelling of the face and neck... and all these drugs can cause sudden drops in blood pressure that lead to dizziness and falls.

And then there's the risk of artificially driving down your blood pressure too low -- especially true where seniors are concerned.

For example:
  • A study of the medical records of nearly 30,000 people discovered a link between reducing blood pressure to the recommended low numbers and a substantially higher risk of developing Alzheimer's.
  • Other research done at Johns Hopkins found that lowering your diastolic, or bottom, number below 60 can make you almost 50 percent more likely to develop heart disease and over 30 percent more likely to die from any cause.
  • Yale researchers have found that seniors who take blood pressure meds for only three years up their chances of taking a fatal fall by almost 40 percent.

If you're over 60 and being told that it's now time to start up on risky drugs to get those numbers down to meet these new "goals," it's a good idea to get a second opinion from a doctor who practices integrative medicine and will look at your overall health, before you rush off to fill that Rx.

Because this big new announcement didn't change any of the facts -- just the numbers!

Until next time, stay healthy and happy
