Omega-3s for Breast Cancer, Heartburn, Back Help, Salt Facts, Stronger Bones, Vitamin Facts

Omega-3s dramatically inhibit breast cancer tumor growth

(NaturalNews)  A new study just published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry appears to be the first to provide what the researchers call "unequivocal evidence that omega-3s reduce cancer risk."

So, how much of a risk are they talking about? A huge one. The scientists from the University of Guelph found that a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids (healthy fats found in cold water fish such as salmon and certain plant foods, including walnuts) can inhibit the growth of breast cancer tumors by 30 percent, especially if started early in life.

"It's a significant finding," David Ma, a professor in Guelph's Department of Human Health and Nutritional Sciences, and one of the study's authors, said in a media statement
. "We show that lifelong exposure to omega-3s has a beneficial role in disease prevention - in this case, breast cancer prevention. What's important is that we have proven that omega-3s are the driving force and not something else."

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women worldwide and is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women. While natural health advocates and many cancer researchers have long thought that diet could help prevent malignancies, studies to document these claims have sometimes been inconsistent or even lacking.

"There are inherent challenges in conducting and measuring diet in such studies, and it has hindered our ability to firmly establish linkages between dietary nutrients and
cancer risk," Ma explained. "So we've used modern genetic tools to address a classic nutritional question."

Here's what Ma and his research team did. They created a novel transgenic mouse that both produces omega-3 fatty acids and develops aggressive mammary tumors. Then, the researchers compared those animals to mice genetically engineered only to develop the same tumors. The results? The mice with the omega-3 exposure not only had 30 percent fewer tumors, but the breast tumors they did develop were a third of the size smaller than those in the control animals.

"This model provides a purely genetic approach to investigate the effects of lifelong
omega-3s exposure on breast cancer development. To our knowledge, no such approach has been used previously to investigate the role of omega-3s and breast cancer," Ma stated. "The fact that a food nutrient can have a significant effect on tumor development and growth is remarkable and has considerable implications in breast cancer prevention."

Ma, who is an expert in how fats influence health and disease, added in the media statement that he hopes the study leads to more research on using diet to reduce cancer risk and on the benefits of healthy living. "Prevention is an area of growing importance. We are working to build a better planet, and that includes better lifestyle and diet," he said. "The long-term consequences of reducing disease incidence can have a tremendous effect on the health-care system."

As Natural News recently reported, there's other good news about preventing
breast cancer with diet and specific nutrients from Harvard researchers, too. A recent study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute concluded that carotenoids (phytonutrients found in yellow, orange and red fruits and vegetables) significantly reduce the risk of breast cancer.

Heartburn Help

Which side do you sleep on? If you have heartburn, left is best.

Recently, I told you about research that discovered this tip for heartburn patients... Sleep on your left side for relief.

"The reason lying on the left side gives more relief from gastric reflux is because most of the stomach lies on the left side of the abdomen. It is a concave curve from the esophageal entrance in the center of the body. Therefore when a person lies on the right side, the stomach is up higher, with the entrance to the esophagus lower, so stomach contents drain back more easily"

Foundation Training For Your Low Back and Hamstrings

There are so many people who struggle with sore backs and tight hamstrings and sitting all day at work only compounds the problem.  The article in the link below shows a new training method that I think is the best way to strengthen and stretch your low back.

I think this exercise makes great sense and I feel it right in my low back when I do it. If you really lift your shoulders and stick out your chest you can feel it tense up the low back muscles like nothing else ever does, but be sure to stay back on your heels. I am doing it regularly and really it helps. Give it a try and see how well it works for you.

The main exercise to focus on is called the “Founder” which you can see in the short video showing how to do the exercises at: Foundation Training

Salt Facts

By Jenny Thompson at Health Science Institute
This may be the most ridiculous -- and dangerous -- food trend of all time.

Believe it or not, the hot new trend is low-sodium SEA salt. Seriously! That's like promoting salmon with low omega-3, or milk with reduced vitamin D.

What's most absurd is that even sea salt packagers have caved in to the nonsense about sodium being bad for you. Their message should be the exact opposite, because sodium from salt is not only good for you, it's critical.

In fact, if you cut back on sodium to the extreme, you'll put yourself in danger four different ways.

Recently, researchers combed through years of sodium studies, looking for evidence that we should all keep our sodium levels low.

Know what they found? Nada. Nothing. There is zero evidence that anyone should follow the American Heart Association recommendation of less than 1,500 mg of sodium per day.

In fact, they found no evidence that limiting sodium to less than 2,300 mg per day produces any benefits either.

I would blame this low-sodium mania on junk science, but there's no science there to blame it on! It's a myth that became medical tradition.

But there IS plenty of evidence that low sodium is harmful. If you push sodium intake too low, you'll sharply increase risks of these four health disasters...

1. Heart disease

2. Type 2 diabetes

3. Liver disease

4. Hyponatraemia

Number four might be new to you. It's not exactly a household word. It's the medical term for chronic low sodium. And the irony is that hyponatraemia symptoms are common conditions that most people simply chalk up to aging: fatigue, confusion, and poor balance.

So your doctor tells you to cut salt out of your diet. It's a struggle, but you manage to do it. Then, when you tell him you're feeling fatigued, easily confused, and off balance, what's the response? Hey, you're getting older. These things happen.

But they don't have to happen to you!

If you want to get through your day with less fatigue, a clear mind, good balance, a healthy heart, and good control of blood sugar, then use real sea salt.

The kind with sodium.  And Celtic Sea Salt is the best kind to use.

Stronger Bones

For complete bone health, the top three must-take supplements are calcium, vitamin D, and...

If you said, "Vitamin K2," you get a gold star. AND strong bones.

In a recent study, 180 micrograms of K2 daily was matched against a placebo. Those in the placebo group had a significantly greater decline in bone mineral density.

Sure, that's impressive. But it could have been even more impressive.

The RDA for Vitamin K is 65 micrograms for women and 80 micrograms for men. So I'm impressed that the researchers dared to use a dose so much higher than the "norm."

I don't have to tell you, there's a whole grandstand of worrywarts who fear that going above the RDA with any vitamin will cause the sky to fall.

Well, let them fret. We're not worried. For years, Dr. Jonathan V. Wright has recommended 5 to 15 MILLIGRAMS of K2 per day.

Research has shown that higher doses of K2 -- measured in milligrams -- boosts bone mineral density.

Other bone-related issues -- like bending and compression strength -- also improve with generous doses of the indispensable K2.

Forbes Says Vitamins are Dangerous?

As reported by NaturalNews
The only thing worse than bad medical research is bad medical research that won't die.

Unfortunately, a 2011 study on multivitamins is like the zombie of useless medical studies.

A recent Forbes article dug up the study to support the insane idea that multivitamins and other vitamin supplements are dangerous.

Let me get my shovel and bash this zombie study in the head once and for all. Because if you fall for this flawed report, you'll be putting yourself at serious risk.

Researchers asked nearly 39,000 older women about their supplement intake and followed their health records for more than 20 years. Results showed a razor-thin link between death during the study period and multivitamin intake.

And as the Forbes article notes, "Death, one must admit, is a pretty bad outcome."

That's cute. But multivitamins didn't take those women's lives.

Consumer Reports explains the first issue: "It was an observational study, not clinical trial, so it's possible that other factors contributed to the results."

Possible? More like absolute certainty!

Here's the thing... To get anywhere near a true test of a supplement, the study has to be placebo controlled. And every time multis are tested in placebo controlled trials, the results are uniformly positive.

This past summer I told you about a placebo controlled multi trial. Men over the age of 50 who began taking a multivitamin reported significant reduction of stress, anxiety, and depression. They also felt more energetic.

And in another large placebo controlled study from last year, multivitamin use for more than a decade was linked to an 8 percent reduction of cancer risk, with no side effects. Eight percent is not an earth-shaking result, but it's the opposite of risking death.

Many of the women in the junk study from 2011 were in their 80s by the end of the study period. So there are all kinds of factors that could have contributed to their deaths.

For instance, supplement users were twice as likely to also use hormone replacement therapy, which is linked to breast cancer and heart disease.

But Forbes didn't bother to mention any of that.

Forbes also didn't mention another interesting finding of this study.. Supplements of calcium, magnesium, vitamins C, D, E, and B-complex were all linked to a LOWER mortality risk over two decades.

Lower mortality, one must admit, is a pretty good outcome.

Report Reveals American Healthcare System Could Save BILLIONS Each Year Through Better Use of Dietary Supplements

The report, titled: "Smart Prevention—Health Care Cost Savings Resulting from the Targeted Use of Dietary Supplements1" was produced through a grant from the Council for Responsible Nutrition Foundation. As reported by Drug Store News:2

“[The report] examined four different chronic diseases and the potential for healthcare cost savings when US adults 55 years and older, diagnosed with these chronic diseases, used one of eight different dietary supplement regimens.

It demonstrated that supplementation at preventive intake levels in high-risk populations can reduce the number of disease-associated medical events, representing the potential for hundreds of millions — and in some cases, billions — of dollars in savings.”

However, researchers failed to evaluate the full impact of vitamin D on chronic disease. If they had, the annual savings in the US alone would have been in the trillions

Use of omega-3 supplements among adults aged 55 and over diagnosed with coronary heart disease could reduce annual hospital costs by more than $2 billion annually, on average

If every person over the age of 55 with age-related eye disease were to take lutein and zeaxanthin at preventive dosage levels, medical savings would average $57.4 million per year

According to the 2013 GAO Dietary Supplements report, there were 488 times as many adverse reactions reported for prescription drugs as from supplements

Data from the EU indicate that pharmaceutical drugs are 62,000 times more likely to kill you as dietary supplements, but the average underreporting rate of drug ADRs is 94 percent, which means that risk may be even greater

The report listed four diseases that supplements can be very helpful for. They are:

Heart disease
Diabetes
Age-related eye disease
Bone disease

My Comment:

Remember that most studies are done with synthetic vitamins, the kind you find in most supplements.  You should always use "whole food" supplements, which are far more effective and much less likely to cause any long-term health issues.  There is little value in synthetic vitamins which can cause more problems than they solve. Your body needs dense nutrition to heal itself and whole food supplements are the nearest thing to real food.  Whole food supplements can also be taken on an empty stomach which is helpful for those who are more sensitive.  Many people have problems taking regular or synthetic vitamins because they are not real food. Two good whole food vitamin brands are MegaFoods, you can see them here Megafood on Amazon, and Well Roots, you can see them here with a $5.00 discount offer from Costco Well Roots at Costco.

As always, send me an email if you have any questions I can help with.

Until next time, stay healthy and happy,
