Eat this for Gluten Sensitivity, New Elderly Flu Shot, Chocolate Is Better Than Fluoride

Sensitive to gluten? Traditional sourdough offers a unique solution to bread woes

(NaturalNews) Jack Bezian of Bezian's Bakery in Santa Monica, California, has an eye-catching sign behind his loaves of bread, stating: "Roman soldiers had only sourdough bread to get protein." But this is only part of the story. For those who suffer from gluten intolerance or celiac disease, Jack's naturally fermented bread is surprisingly easy to digest. Interestingly, several studies have also found true sourdough to be well tolerated by individuals sensitive to gluten.

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder triggered by consuming the protein in wheat, barley and rye - otherwise known as gluten. If a celiac ingests this protein, the immune system mistakenly attacks the villi in the small intestine, causing a cascade of health issues, including leaky gut syndrome, malnutrition, lactose intolerance, osteoporosis, neurological disorders and cancer.

Under normal circumstances, it's necessary for individuals with a gluten sensitivity to completely eliminate the troublesome offender from their diet. However, two small studies involving sourdough bread give hope to the millions who believe they need to swear off gluten containing grains forever.

A European study of 17 celiac patients who consumed sourdough bread had an intriguing outcome. When the volunteers ingested a specialized sourdough containing lactobacilli culture, none of the participants exhibited any negative effects of intestinal permeability. The bread was made with 30 percent wheat flour and a combination of oat, millet and buckwheat flours. The researchers concluded, "These results showed that a
bread
biotechnology that uses selected lactobacilli, nontoxic flours, and a long fermentation time is a novel tool for decreasing the level of gluten intolerance in humans."

Similarly, another study found that "individuals with
celiac disease who ate specially prepared sourdough wheat bread over the course of 60 days experienced no ill effects," writes Tasha Gerken in "Celiacs Can Say Yes to Sourdough Bread." Read more about the testing protocol here
.

Research published in Applied and Environmental Microbiology offers a possible explanation. Scientists discovered that, when wheat bread is thoroughly fermented, gluten content drops from approximately 75,000 ppm to 12 - a level technically considered gluten-free.

Not all bread is created equal

The key is a long fermentation process - up to a month with bakers like Jack Bezian. When bread is leavened naturally with lactobacilli, it transforms wheat flour into a nutrient-rich edible which is abundant in vitamins B, C and E, bioavailable protein, fatty acids and minerals. With true sourdough, bone and tooth destroying phytates are minimized as well.

Jack believes it's important to knead the bread thoroughly and allow it to ferment for a lengthy stretch of time. There are no shortcuts here, but if you have an issue with gluten and miss the joy of bread, a true sourdough may be the answer.

New Stronger Flu Shot For The Elderly

By Jenny Thompson at Health Science Institute

Believe it or not, even the flu-shot-loving CDC officials won't come out and recommend the newest flu shot for seniors.

Considering "pushing flu shots at all costs" is practically the opening line of its charter, this is a shocking turn of events. And if the CDC refuses to line seniors up for a flu shot, you know it is a bad idea.

Stepping into the unknown

That's why holistic doctor Jacob Teitelbaum is warning seniors to avoid getting the Fluzone High-Dose shot.

FH-D is four times stronger than the regular flu shot. It's supposed to give a mega-boost to immune systems that grow weaker as we age.  Dr. Teitelbaum says he's telling patients to not be FH-D guinea pigs. And I couldn't agree more.

But there's a little more to it than that. This shot should not be on the market at all.

On a CDC website, officials actually admit they only know how the shot is supposed to work. So nobody knows if quadrupling the dose will create any benefit at all.

What's even more reckless, they don't know if the Big Quad dose will also quadruple side effects. The CDC hints at greater side effects, but they play coy and don't go into details.

And that's especially dangerous these days, when many seniors don't get their shots from their doctors who might follow Dr. Teitelbaum's lead and advise them to not be guinea pigs. Or, equally important, be able to monitor their side effects.

Millions now get their shots from Walgreens, Target, or WalMart employees who they see only once and who would never even wonder if there could be safety issues with an FDA-approved flu vaccine.

But they definitely should. Here are the flu vaccine numbers from just ONE YEAR, reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System...

* 2,980 hospitalizations
* 405 prolonged hospitalizations
* 260 permanent disabilities
* 797 life-threatening events
* 203 deaths

Now imagine what would happen if you multiply those annual numbers by four.

My Comment:
I want to remind you about my good friend Greta who is in her 70's and had received a flu shot 2 years ago which made her very ill the next day.  She spent the next two months in the hospital with a swollen brain. The flu shot she received was the old "double dose" for elderly people. Imagine what the new FH-D flu shot that is 4 times as strong will do to people with weaker immune systems?

Chocolate Is Better for your Teeth than Fluoride

Reported Dr. Mercola

Fluoride is a toxic industrial waste product that is a poison to your body even in trace amounts, yet it is added to the majority of US water supplies using the rationale that it helps prevent dental cavities.

The archaic practice continues even though it is now widely recognized that fluoride’s only justifiable benefit comes from topical contact with teeth – and even that is debatable.

To put it simply, there are FAR better options for decreasing tooth decay than ingesting a harmful industrial pollutant or using a topical poison like fluoride… in fact, new research suggests even chocolate extract would make a better alternative.

Chocolate Toothpaste Works Better Than Fluoride

A recent study presented at the American Dental Association (ADA) 2013 Annual Session pitted fluoride toothpaste against a new toothpaste that contains the naturally-occurring cacao extract theobromine.

This test determined which product better repaired and re-mineralized exposed dentin (the tissue that makes up the bulk of your teeth below the enamel). Exposed dentin is a leading cause of tooth hypersensitivity.

The results showed that patients who brushed their teeth with the cacao-extract toothpaste twice a day for one week had “100 percent dental occlusion” with their tooth dentin becoming re-mineralized or repaired. According to a press release:1

“The comparison to toothpastes containing fluoride - one as much as 5,000 ppm [parts per million] - validates what our research has shown all along: that Rennou [the cocoa extract] … is more effective and safer than fluoride, which can be toxic if ingested."

Scientists Now Questioning Whether Fluoride Works to Fight Cavities

With potential alternatives like theobromine, which, unlike fluoride, are not harmful when swallowed, it’s unfortunate that fluoride can still be found in a vast assortment of toothpastes, mouthwashes and professionally applied fluoride treatments. It's even added to your drinking water for this purpose, as mentioned.

Fluoride, long heralded as the answer to decaying teeth, is receiving increasing scrutiny – and for good reason.

Fluoride Toothpaste Can Be Deadly to Children

I'm not a fan of fluoridated toothpaste for adults or children, but if you do decide to use it, it’s probably best to keep it safely out of the reach of your children. Fluoride toothpaste is often the largest single source of fluoride intake for young children, and is a major risk factor for disfiguring dental fluorosis.

This is because children swallow a large amount of the paste that they put in their mouth. In fact, research has shown that it is not uncommon for young children to swallow more fluoride from toothpaste alone than is recommended as an entire day's ingestion from all sources.5

If you have a young child, it’s recommended that you use a non-fluoride toothpaste. If, however, you do use fluoride toothpaste, it's very important that you supervise your children while they brush to make sure they use no more than a "pea-sized amount" of paste, and that they fully rinse and spit after they finish.

And, lastly, do not purchase candy-flavored toothpaste (e.g., bubble-gum and watermelon) as these toothpastes (which still contain adult-strength concentrations of fluoride) increase the risk that your children will swallow it (and actually want to swallow it). Still, it’s hard to ignore the absurdity that poison control should be called if you swallow a quarter milligram of fluoride from toothpaste while just ONE glass of water can contain this amount of fluoride.

The Insanity of Swallowing Fluoride to Prevent Cavities

The science clearly demonstrates that fluoride is a toxic chemical that accumulates in your tissues over time, wreaks havoc with enzymes, and produces a number of serious adverse health effects, including neurological and endocrine dysfunction.

Children are particularly at risk for adverse effects of overexposure. Scientists from the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory have classified fluoride as a "chemical having substantial evidence of developmental neurotoxicity," 25 studies have now reported an association between fluoride exposure and reduced IQ in children.

My Comment:
There are many brands of toothpaste available that do not contain fluoride and are much healthier to use than the old standby brands.  Toothpaste that contains Tee Tree Oil or Grapefruit Seed Extract will help naturally eliminate bacteria and prevent gum disease.  Try to buy a toothpaste that uses Xylitol as the sweetener. Xylitol naturally prevents cavities and protects your teeth, which is the exact opposite of most sweeteners.  My favorite is Jason Powersmile Vanilla Mint with both Grapefruit Seed and Xylitol.  If you are tired of mint flavored toothpaste and want something better then give this a try.  It tastes great, works great and is good for you.  You can find it at many stores now like Walgreens and Super Supplements or online at my favorite Swanson Vitamins http://www.swansonvitamins.com/jason-natural-powersmile-toothpaste-vanilla-mint-6-oz-paste

Until next time, stay healthy and happy
