Strong And Consistent Evidence Links Multivitamins to Memory And Cognitive Benefits
An analysis of over 5,000 people suggests multivitamins protect our mental faculties as we age, raising the possibility that daily doses of these supplements could help guard against diseases such as Alzheimer's.
Researchers, led by a team from Mass General Brigham, ran in-person cognitive tests on 573 participants aged over 60 over the course of two years. The volunteers were split into four groups and given different combinations of cocoa extract supplements, multivitamin supplements, and placebos.
When matched against the brainpower tests that were carried out, the supplements were linked to a statistically significant benefit in terms of overall cognitive skills over two years, and an even greater boost in episodic memory.
The data from this in-person study was then combined with a meta-analysis of two earlier studies, covering another 4,630 people over 60, assessed via phone calls and online tests. This further analysis also showed that those who had taken the supplements performed better in cognitive and memory tests.
"Cognitive decline is among the top health concerns for most older adults, and a daily supplement of multivitamins has the potential as an appealing and accessible approach to slow cognitive aging," says psychiatrist Chirag Vyas from Mass General Brigham.
Taking the review of all 5,203 people together, the researchers say that taking multivitamins appeared to slow cognitive aging by the equivalent of two years on average, compared with taking placebos.
While the new study isn't enough to prove direct cause and effect, it's large enough to make the case that certain supplements can offer important health benefits – something previous research hasn't really demonstrated.
The authors note there was low ethnic and racial diversity among the mainly Non-Hispanic White participants, and they only studied one multivitamin supplement, so their results may not be generalizable. The participants were all over 60, so more research is needed to investigate any benefit to other groups.
A benefit of the analysis is that different methods for assessing cognitive ability were used across the three studies, and yet they all came to the same broad conclusion – that these supplements could be slowing down brain decline.
"The meta-analysis of three separate cognition studies provides strong and consistent evidence that taking a daily multivitamin, containing more than 20 essential micronutrients, helps prevent memory loss and slow down cognitive aging," says Vyas.
With the number of people with neurodegenerative diseases continuing to rise, this is potentially a simple and affordable way of reducing the risk of these conditions developing at an earlier age.
Next, the researchers want to dig deeper into why this relationship between multivitamins and cognitive ability is showing up, because it's not immediately clear which of these multiple vitamins and minerals might be having the most effect on the brain.
"It is now critical to understand the mechanisms by which a daily multivitamin may protect against memory loss and cognitive decline with a focus on nutritional status and other aging-related factors," says epidemiologist Howard Sesso, from Mass General Brigham.
The research has been published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
My Comment:
When picking a multivitamin, it is important that you use a “Whole Food” multivitamin. Whole Food means they are not using synthetic vitamins
created in a lab, which is what is used in 99% of the over-the-counter
vitamins sold in the US. Synthetic vitamins do not work well and can cause other
vitamin deficiencies because your body has to reconstruct the whole vitamin
compound before it can be used by the body. This means that it must rob your
bones and organs of other nutrients to be able to use isolated synthetic vitamins. Whole
Food vitamins use real food to concentrate the nutrients in the natural form
found in food, which are much more bioavailable to be used by your body. One whole
food multivitamin that I recommend for both price and convenience is from Costco at:
https://www.costco.com/kirkland-signature-usda-organic-multivitamin-80-coated-tablets.product.100458954.html
And it happens to be on sale at $4.50 off right now, and delivery is free.
Why is Organic Food Essential for the Future of America?
Across the country, millions of families struggle daily with behavioral, physical, and mental health issues with their children and family members. Over 30% of young couples are bereft because they cannot conceive. One out of two men and one out of two women are expected to get cancer. One in three Americans have fatty liver disorders. I could list the deeply disturbing statistics for days...but you don’t have to look any further, really, than your family members. Every family in America is impacted today by cancer, heart disease, autism, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, IBS, Crohn’s disease, autoimmune disorders, diabetes, obesity, or reproductive and mental health issues. We are in a health crisis. What do all these conditions have in common?
They can all be caused and exacerbated by agrochemicals in the conventional food supply.
The parents who have figured this out and feed their children organic, as featured in numerous books and films such as Jeffery Smith and Amy Hart’s movie Secret Ingredients, see the recovery within days, weeks, or months.
The answer to our health crisis is organic food, food grown without genetically modified organisms, harmful pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides, and with careful attention to the integrity of the growing process. Ideally, organic food is also grown regeneratively, with cover crops and animals grazing, to build organic matter in the soil and increase nutrient density. Also, ideally, farmers would test their fertilizer sources for heavy metals and monitor these toxins.
Moms Across America beseeches organic growers and food manufacturers to continue and expand their essential work. Lives depend on your dedication despite the long and seemingly thankless hours. Due to the toxins in the food supply, most of our children have leaky guts and chemical sensitivities.
Some examples of our recent food testing show why transforming the food supply and increasing access to organic, nutrient-dense food is so important.MAA summary of the testing of 43 school lunches and 42 fast food samples:
- 93% and 100% of the school lunch and fast food samples ( 40+) tested positive for glyphosate herbicide, respectively.
- 74-76% were positive for at least 1 of up to 29 different harmful pesticides.
- 40-60% of the samples contained antibiotics, anti-parasitics, and veterinary drugs, including an aviary contraceptive in a Chick-fil-A sandwich and four school lunch samples.
- 47% of the fast food samples contained a central nervous system depressant called Butanediol, which causes combativeness. Fast food companies are major suppliers of school meals.
- 100% of the samples had insufficient vitamins and minerals, especially Vitamin B, essential for prefrontal cortex function and decision-making that reduces violence.
- 100% of the samples were positive for heavy metals, lead, and cadmium.
- 80% of the samples had levels of lead higher than FDA limits in drinking water
- One sample, in a goat milk baby formula, had aluminum levels of 41,000 ppb, which exceeded EU and CA EPA safety limits.
Regarding organic and regenerative organic food: If you grow
it, we will buy it.
Not only because we want safe and healthy food for our
families or to support locally grown food in the USA, but because we see the
future of our great country both with and without toxic agrochemicals and
choose a thriving future without them. Farmers have farmed for thousands of
generations without GMOs and poisonous chemicals and with dedication, love, and
integrity. We feel that organic farmers are ingenious and can continue to
support a thriving future.

Can Ginger Beat The Multi-Billion Dollar Acid Blockers?
Did you know that the multi-billion drug category known as "acid blockers," despite being used by millions around the world daily, may not work as well as the humble ginger plant in relieving symptoms of indigestion and heartburn?
Ginger is a spice, a food, and has been used as a medicine safely for millennia by a wide range of world cultures. Research on the health benefits of ginger is simply staggering in its depth and breadth. In fact, the health benefits of ginger have been studied extensively for over 100 health conditions or symptoms, making it one of the world's most versatile, evidence-based remedies.
The biomedical literature on acid blockers, on the other hand, is rife with examples of the many adverse health effects that come with blocking stomach acid production with xenobiotic, patented drugs, i.e. proton pump inhibitors and H2 antagonists. What started out as "heartburn" – which in its chronic form is now called "acid reflux" or "gastroesophageal reflux disorder" – soon becomes stomach acid barrier dysfunction, when these drugs remove the acid which protects us from infection, helps to break down food, and facilitate the absorption of minerals and nutrients.
The list of 30+ harms is extensive, but here are a few of the most well-established adverse effects you may not be aware of:
- Clostridium Infections
- Diarrhea
- Pneumonia
- Bone Fractures
- Gastric Lesions and Cancer
Back to our friend – our "plant ally" – ginger. What happens when Pharma meets Farm in a biomedical face-off? When acid-blocking drugs are compared in efficacy to our little spicy ginger root? Well, this is what the journal Molecular Research and Food Nutrition found back in 2007 ...
Titled, "Inhibition of gastric H+, K+-ATPase and Helicobacter pylori growth by phenolic antioxidants of Zingiber officinale," the study set out to determine the anti-ulcer and anti-Helicobacter plyori (a bacteria commonly implicated in ulcer formation) capacity of ginger extracts versus conventional acid-blocking agents, such as lansoprazole (trade name Prevacid). Researchers found that one fraction of ginger exhibited six- to eight-fold better potency over lansoprazole at inhibiting acid production (specifically, gastric cell proton potassium ATPase activity).
But, this was not all. Ginger was also found to have potent antioxidant properties, protecting both lipids from peroxidation (rancidity) and DNA damage, leading the researchers to conclude that specific fractions within ginger have "potential in-expensive multistep blockers against ulcer."
Also, drugs interfere and/or remove the stomach acid barrier also deactivate acid-dependent protein-digesting (proteolytic enzymes) such as pancreatic protease, and increases the risk of infection as a result of the loss of the anti-infective effects of the stomach's acid.
Ginger actually has an exactly opposite set of benefits: it contains a proteolytic enzyme several hundred times more potent than the one found in papaya (papain) and has broad-spectrum antibacterial, antiviral and antiparasitic properties, to name but only a few of its 40+ distinct pharmacological actions.
While this study focused on specific isolates of the whole ginger plant, it must be remembered that whole plants are not drugs, nor should be reduced to "nutraceutical" magic-bullets in order to become new palliative drug alternatives, which is to say, symptom-repressors, leaving the real healing job of changing the underlying nutritional context which leads to the problem in the first place, unchanged.
While taking a ginger pill is usually a better choice than a chemical one, for most folks, ginger should be consumed in whole forms, in moderate and balanced quantities, along with a nourishing, organic, whole-food and traditional foods diet, in order to move beyond the paradigm of popping pills, or proprietary fractions of herbs in order to balance out the pendulum of extremes.
Either way, I think its time we realize everything we already need is likely in our backyard, our refrigerators or cupboards.
My Comment:Acid blockers, (Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), whether drugs like Prilosec, Nexium, and Prevacid, or in the form of a chewable like TUMS, all do one thing. They prevent your stomach from having enough acid to naturally digest food and utilize the nutrients properly. Never use an acid blocker for extended periods. If you have Acid Reflux or other digestion issues, you will be much better off seeing a Naturopathic Doctor for a safe long-term solution that will not cause dangerous side-effects or nutrient deficiencies. Suppressing your stomach acid can have serious long-term health consequences.
Until next time, stay healthy and happy
