Brown Fat, Nutrition Instead of Psychiatric Meds, Cholesterol Update

Brown Fat Breakthrough

You can shed fat, burn calories and watch the numbers on your scale plummet without having to work so hard to get the job done.

The secret is already inside your body, it’s brown fat.

Most of our fat is white fat, better known as belly blubber or muffin top. You know the stuff I'm talking about. It's the junk that collects around your middle, turning your thighs to cottage cheese and giving you "man boobs."

The rest of your fat -- just 10 percent of it -- is brown fat, which is another beast altogether. Brown fat causes you to BURN calories, especially when you need to keep warm, which is why infants and Eskimos have plenty of it and you've got very little.

The trick is to make more brown fat to burn up the white blubber. And right now, cutting-edge research finds that an ancient Chinese herb already used daily by many diabetics for blood sugar support might be able to do just that.

It's called Berberine, and a recent study on mice finds it increases brown fat activity so much that these little critters didn't gain weight even when they were allowed to eat like pigs.

In a second study, another research team identified a protein called Zfp516 that helps turn white fat into brown so well that switching it on could help you burn up to 600 extra calories a day without lifting anything heavier than your dinner fork.

And once again, the researchers believe Berberine could flip that switch.

Naturally, this isn't a license to pop some Berberine and eat whatever you want. Even if you did lose weight, you sure as heck wouldn't be healthy. But if you've got some stubborn belly blubber or a persistent muffin top, this might just be the boost you need to finally melt it off.

Top Shrink Jumps Ship on Dangerous Psychiatric Meds

I never thought I'd see the day -- but a leading shrink is finally admitting that the foundation of the entire industry is about as sturdy as a house of cards. And what he's recommended next has the potential to cause the whole thing to come tumbling down.

Good riddance!

For over 50 years now the number one tool in every shrink's toolbox has been a prescription pad. No matter your mood, they'll find a med to "fix it" -- but Dr. Jerome Sarris of the University of Melbourne has done the unthinkable. He decided to shine a bright light on this despicable practice.

Dr. Sarris recently wrote in The Lancet Psychiatry that this entire approach hasn't done much for the millions of patients suffering from mental health disorders.

So you know what he's recommending instead? Not more drugs... not new drugs.. not better drugs... and not even hour after endless hour on Dr. Freud's moldy old sofa.

No, he wants shrinks to recommend better nutrition and even SUPPLEMENTS to help ease or eliminate mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety.

"Nutrition is as important to psychiatry as it is to cardiology, endocrinology and gastroenterology," he wrote.

Well hallelujah! This is only what I've been saying for years now. Better late than never, I suppose.

His recommendations read like a "greatest hits" collection of everything I've urged for mental health -- including the brain-boosting vitamin B12 you'll find in steak.

Goodbye, Prozac... and hello, prime rib!

He also urged us to raise our vitamin D levels (which you can get from a supplement or some time in the sun) and brain-boosting omega-3 fatty acids, which can be found in fish oil.

In addition, he said there's evidence to back folate, choline, iron, zinc, magnesium, S-adenosyl methionine (SAMe) and amino acids -- and that if mental health patients aren't getting these important nutrients from diet alone, then they should be given supplements.

Imagine that -- a shrink recommending vitamins over meds!

Government Does a 180-Turn On Cholesterol

The alarming numbers tell a frightening story: in the last three decades diabetes and obesity rates have doubled in the U.S.

Somehow, we've become a fatter and sicker nation than at any other time in our history.

Public health officials keep fishing around for reasons why -- things like we're less active, or we don't get enough sleep. Maybe next they'll say it's all because of global warming!

But it turns out the real reason is their fault.

Egg on their faces
-------------------------------------------

Every five years, by law, the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee gets together to put out its report on the "official" way Americans are supposed to eat.

And for 35 years now, we've been getting deadly dietary advice from it. Advice warning us about the "evils" of fat and cholesterol, all while shoving a sickening high-carb, high-sugar diet down our throats.

Cholesterol is the basic building block of all hormones, and most of it is made by our body rather than derived from the food we eat. Cholesterol isn’t the ticking time bomb most people have been led to think. Dr. Harlan Krumholz of Yale’s Department of Cardiovascular Medicine found that old people with low cholesterol died twice as often from a heart attack as did old people with high cholesterol.

A review of nineteen large studies of more than 68,000 deaths by the Division of Epidemiology at the University of Minnesota found that low cholesterol predicted an increased risk of dying from gastrointestinal and respiratory diseases.

So of course, when the news was recently announced that the DGAC just did a 180-degree turn on cholesterol, saying it no longer considers it to be a "nutrient of concern," it made headlines.

Surprising? Not really. Because considering how behind the curve this group is, they couldn't really hold onto that cholesterol myth much longer.

Even though it sounds like a breakthrough of sorts, it's really not. Because even after admitting that it gave you bad -- and even dangerous -- advice on cholesterol for 35 years, the DGAC still holds on to the party line that fat is bad for you.

How this group could have missed the fact that the low-fat, no-fat sacred cow was put out to pasture a very long time ago is a deep, dark mystery.

Especially with all the new research that keeps coming out.

For example:

  • A recent study from Tulane University published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that cutting your carbs -- NOT fat -- will do more to help you lose weight and protect your heart than any tasteless, low-fat diet ever could.
  • Not only did the people in this study lose weight eating eggs, butter and red meat (two of which are high on the committee's "bad" list), but they showed a healthy increase in HDL -- the "good" kind of cholesterol.
  • Last year, other research, also published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that a kind of dairy fat called margaric acid can "significantly reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease." And guess where you can find a great source of this margaric acid? In butter!
  • A big study published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine found that a Mediterranean-type diet -- one high in olive oil and other good fats, like those found in nuts -- will slash your diabetes risk by a whopping 40 percent. And, for people who already have diabetes, eating this way lowered their heart attack and stroke risk by 30 percent.

And then there's coconut oil, a "forbidden" saturated fat that may be in a special category all on its own.

Last year Danish researchers, in partnership with the National Institutes of Health, discovered that not only is fat necessary for our brains to stay healthy, but that one of the best kinds is coconut oil.

The researchers said that a diet high in good fats like coconut oil may be able to "postpone aging processes." In fact, certain fats are so good for your brain that they may even be able to help patients with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

My Comment:

I have said for a long time that the right fat is good for you and our bodies need fat to function properly. Not only is cholesterol not bad for you, but your brain uses large amounts of it daily. So avoid low fat diets and instead just eliminate the carbs and processed foods to stay fit and healthy.

And while we are at it, let’s talk about cholesterol medications. Sooner or later the medical establishment will have to admit that Statin drugs are basically useless, unnecessary and harmful no matter how many billions of dollars they bring in. As is always the case, they are 10 to 20 years behind the natural health doctors who lead the way to a much healthier life through better nutrition.

Until next time, stay healthy and happy
